2022.01.26 08:49 eww_skydrol CRJ-900 fuel feed anomaly

Hi Guys,
This one is for all you 900 mechs out there who have either never seen this and will now know about it and those who have seen this scenario and can shed some light on it.
On single engine operation, if I run the LH engine, the LH wing tank will INCREASE in quantity and the RH wing tank will decrease in quantity. This goes for running the RH engine as well. The fuel quantity increases in the RH tank.
You would think (especially when the schematics detail this very well) that the LH engine would feed from the LH wing tank and you would see a corresponding decrease in fuel from that LH tank.
This is with the center tank empty.
I would love to know why this is the case. My colleague and I were attempting to troubleshoot this “snag” when we ran a separate airplane to find the same thing happened.
So it would seem this is by design?
I would love to know your experience with this situation
Cheers!

2022.01.26 08:49 No_Strawberry_6027 Prog another patent material

innovative biotechnology company, today announced the award of another new patent related to its single-molecule detection assay platform under development. The USPTO has issued U.S. Patent No. 11,230,731 entitled, “Methods, Systems, and Compositions for Counting Nucleic Acid Molecules.” The issued claims are directed to detecting a labeled target molecule on a solid support.
“We have added another important patent to our IP portfolio for the single-molecule detection platform, which is designed to enable sequence-free counting of target analytes including cell-free nucleic acids. We believe this approach may have important near-term impact in the fields of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and liquid biopsy. This latest patent covers key compositions and methods for labeling target molecules,” said Matthew Cooper, General Manager, Diagnostics. “This platform has the potential to greatly reduce operating costs and reduce turnaround times for genomic tests, with potential utility extending from nucleic acids to proteins. We are committed to maximizing the value of our patent portfolio and are actively assessing partnerships and other approaches that may expedite a path to market.”

2022.01.26 08:49 beebeebeebeebbbb Acceptance takes the power out of misery

I have found a lot of value in developing an active ‘acceptance practice’ across different domains of my life. By tuning into our experiences –especially challenging ones– with an attitude of acceptance and curiosity, it can be easier to sit peacefully with difficult thoughts, emotions and experiences. Nurturing the practice of switching on an observant, accepting mindset can help us get past personal obstacles where we might be stuck, and open doors to self-growth and change. Acceptance can be a versatile tool to engage with difficult thoughts and experiences in a way that enables resilience and flexibility.
—> The ‘noological’; the ‘ontological’; ‘system 2’ thinking
The practice of acceptance contrasts with the everyday mode that we tend to spend most of our time operating in. In this mode we are typically wrapped up in our experience. We attach to, react and fight against our difficult emotions. We often identify and ‘fuse’ with our thoughts and beliefs. There are some common threads that we can follow through ideas in psychology, philosophy and neuroscience that relate to the value of cultivating acceptance.
Victor Frankl introduced the notions of the ‘noological’ space and the ‘psyche’ space. The psyche encompasses the everyday, knee-jerk reacting, the experiential mode in which we are absorbed with and attached to our thoughts and emotions. The ‘noological’ is the headspace which we can step into where we are above and observing the dance of thoughts and emotions in the psyche — a quasi-‘spiritual’ space where we can practice transcending the patterns of attachment and reaction in the psyche.
German philosopher Heidegger similarly described two modes of being, the “ontological” and the “everyday”:

“Heidegger proposed two modes of existence: the everyday mode and the ontological mode (from onto, “being,” and the suffix -logy, “study of”). In your everyday mode, you are entirely absorbed in your surroundings, and you marvel at how things are in the world; whereas in the ontological mode, you focus on and appreciate the miracle of “being” itself and marvel that things are, that you are.” (Excerpt from Staring At The Sun by Irvin Yalom)
As part of an acceptance practice we can develop this mode of noticing, this awareness that things are, with gratitude for the marvel of existence and acceptance of being.
In neuroscience and psychology research related to decision making and cognition, influential early work by Daniel Kahneman described two basic patterns in our cognition linked to “fast” and “slow” thinking. Fast thinking governed by “system 1” is thought of as evolutionarily older, automatic, reactive, taking shortcuts, getting quick and dirty solutions that help us survive in situations requiring quickfire actions and processing. Slow thinking governed by “system 2” is evolutionarily more recent, slower, consumes more resources and involves more careful deliberation, providing access to more nuanced and balanced perspectives. Our automatic tendency is to operate with system 1, but investing the time and energy in system 2 thinking can lead to a perspective that is more cool, calm and considered.
From each of these powerful ideas we can draw lessons for applying acceptance practice in our lives: to cultivate a ‘noological’ perspective, stepping above and observing the dynamics in the stage of our psyche; to grow our existential awareness, receiving existence just as it is with curiosity and gratitude; to think slowly, taking our time to digest the world, notice and process before reacting.
Though they are imperfect and approximate, each of these ideas captures some useful shared elements of our human experience. By checking in with our tendencies to operate in each of these modes, we can calibrate our habitual experience and thinking to be slower, more tuned into existence, stepping back and observing the way things are without getting sucked into the swirl of thought and emotion.
—> Acceptance practice for resilience and growth
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers
Using an acceptance approach has yielded rapid and practical benefits for me in managing my own mental health challenges, and in working on sticking points in my habits and personal growth. An idea I am fond of in psychology is “what you resist, persists”. When we get caught up wrestling with negative thoughts or emotions and try to beat them and ‘win’, instead we actually end up give those negative experiences power by engaging the thoughts and emotions on their own terms. Instead of engaging them on their own terms at the level of the ‘psyche’ and the ‘everyday’, we can zoom out and step above to the ‘ontological’ and ‘noological’ space. By strengthening this perspective, we can practice observing and accepting negative experiences as they are — and in doing so, we can rob them of their power.
For instance, writing is something that brings me a lot of fulfilment and joy when I can bring myself to do it — however, I struggle with perfectionism and a lot of worry about the quality of my writing and the belief that if my writing is not of a good enough standard, then I am not a good enough person. If I let my anxiety and negative thoughts engage me on their own terms and run unchecked, I am paralysed into inaction and avoidance. Instead if I zoom out and notice my perfectionistic thoughts and anxiety, accept that I am having them, and start writing anyway, I find that I am able to rob these thoughts and emotions of their power. Using an acceptance practice, rather than dreaming of writing but being paralysed with feelings of fear and inadequacy, I am able to sit with the negative emotions and still sit down and write. I feel much more fulfilled and satisfied writing something that –although imperfect–, actually exists.
Paradoxically by observing, noticing and accepting negative experiences just as they are, we can reduce the hold that they have over our attachment, our automatic reactions and investment.
Strengthening an acceptance practice can help us to weather hardship with an even keel; to open up space for personal change and growth in areas that we feel stuck; to cultivate a headspace where challenging events, thoughts and emotions can be experienced with dignity and calm.
These strategies have been impactful for me. If anything in these brief thoughts resonate with you, I encourage you to explore some of the resources mentioned above and think about how you could put some of these ideas into action.
